Flight Data Management Systems: The Key to Airport Efficiency

by | Nov 6, 2024 | ATC Services, ATC Systems

When airports operate efficiently, flights are more likely to run on schedule, running costs are lower, and passengers enjoy an unforgettable experience for all the right reasons. But as passenger and flight numbers soar, it’s more important than ever that airport managers and Air Traffic Controllers make use of the latest technology to drive efficiency improvements.

Flight Data Management Systems (FDMS) have become indispensable tools for enhancing airport efficiency, playing a critical role in ensuring that airports operate smoothly and that air traffic controllers can manage the complex movement of aircraft with precision.

Real-Time Flight Information Management

Anyone who has viewed live flight radar information will know that the skies are incredibly crowded, but few will understand the complex work that ATC staff undertake to ensure the safe movement of aircraft. Effective flight management is essential to optimise flight times and eliminate the risk of accidents: a single delayed flight can have a widespread impact across the network, so controllers must have instant access to real-time information to make decisions.

FDMS provides ATC controllers with the flight information they require to efficiently manage air traffic. With access to real-time data, ATC can monitor flight progress, adjust schedules, and allocate resources more efficiently, thereby ensuring that disruptions or delays are proactively managed, reducing the ripple effects that can cause widespread chaos across the network.

Automated Flight Plan Modifications

Another invaluable feature of FDMS is its ability to automate flight plan modifications. By automatically applying changes to flight plans received via the Aeronautical Fixed Telecommunication Network (AFTN), the system reduces the likelihood of human error and ensures that flight plans are promptly and accurately updated. By minimising manual intervention, FDMS enhances the overall efficiency of data management, allowing ATC staff to focus on other critical tasks.

Efficient Handling Of Incomplete Or Inaccurate Messages

A key feature of FDMS is its ability to manage incomplete or inaccurate messages. When the system detects such messages, it flags them for the attention of operators who can review the messages, make necessary corrections, and resubmit them. By ensuring that all communications are accurate and complete, FDMS helps to maintain the integrity of flight data which is essential for safe and efficient airport operations.

Wake Vortex Conversion

The inclusion of a Wake Vortex conversion facility is another critical component of FDMS. This feature enables the one-way conversion of Wake Vortex categories, which is then applied to all flight strip information displayed and printed by the FDMS. Wave vortex conversion ensures that aircraft are managed according to their specific wake turbulence category, enhancing safety and optimising the use of runways.

Central Flow Management Unit (CFMU) Awareness

FDMS is also adaptable to the strategic and tactical repositioning of flights as dictated by the Central Flow Management Unit (CFMU) of Euro Control. The system can modify the Estimated Off-Block Time (EOBT) of a flight or, in some cases, suspend a flight altogether. This feature ensures that flight schedules are aligned with broader air traffic management strategies, reducing congestion and improving overall efficiency.
